Ooh, I was excited when I saw this was the topic - I'm a passionate gardener and it's always great to find another lesbian gardener! I was brought up on a farm here in New Zealand and my mother was a passionate gardener so it's in my blood too. We've lived on a 1/2 acre property for 26 years and I've planted a cottage garden filled with roses, an orchard and a vegetable garden, plus I propagate and sell plants. And I too have found gardening very helpful with my mental health. Thanks Carol, love your work x

Oh wow! That’s amazing! Where I live we can grow all except the apples and pears. To hot. Stone fruit use to be grown here a lot . Grapes is also a big crop.

Sounds beautiful! What kind of trees do you have in the orchard?

2 apples, 2 pears, 3 peaches, 2 nectarines, 4 plums, 3 feijoas, 2 oranges, 2 lemons, a lime an apricot and a passionfruit. Just a shame that our two (now adult) children were always so fussy about a bit of bird peck or a blemish on the fruit, as I mainly planted the trees for them and they would often reject anything that wasn't perfect! I blame supermarket fruit for that, as they thought all fruit should look like that. Oh well, I love the fruit so that's ok, and I often preserve it, including making damson gin!

I am a lesbian who has failed at gardening, and has NEVER liked camping. My straight, master-gardener, daughter obviously did not inherit this from me. However, I enjoy eating the food from her garden, and am most happy to eat food from anyone's garden.

Aww, I’m sorry. I believe everyone can be taught to at least have some house plants. The most common mistake people do is over water.

Actually, the point of my post was to show that not all lesbians are into gardening and camping.

I don't feel bad, really. I've never really been into it. LOL.

It was such a pleasure to listen to your stories!! I am so impressed with your gardening feats, it’s clear you’re closely connected to plants. So many memories came up for me. My ex i had the longest term relationship with is a skilled gardener and herbalist and she taught me pretty much everything i know. I started my first garden right around when i met her, devastated from a recent breakup and needing to connect with nature. As we became closer we grew gardens and made herbal tinctures together. I joined her as a volunteer at the amazing herbal medicine garden she worked at. truly beautiful land with so much life.

i’ve never been a natural at plants myself…it doesn’t come easy to me to speak their language. But i’ve had some successes, including with passionflower! it’s so forgiving to the inexperienced gardener and its flowers are so unbelievably stunning and unique. i think of that one as my dear friend.

this episode reminded me i do want to start a garden at the place i just moved in to. we have a little spot out front i think i’ll collect some soil from to test.

thank you for sharing your art!!

When I saw this episode in my email I got very excited to listen! Plants are life! I am lucky to get paid to do what I love. I work at a farm/plant nursery. We have about 8 giant greenhouses full of plants during the high season. I also do some independent gigs caring for peoples gardens in the area. I couldn’t be happier. I found my plant calling later in life as I’m 42 now. Although I do agree that it is in the blood. My dad always had beautiful gardens when I was growing up. I didnt start gardening until my late 20’s and early 30’s and have just expanded since then. My favorite horticulture interests are native perennials and food plants. There is literally nothing better than growing and caring for plants! Thank you for sharing your story and love of plants with us. I leave gardens everywhere I go as my legacy to this Earth.
