Thank you so much, Carol and Ellen, for this! I'm in Oakland and have been in the Bay Area since I was 15 (in 1966) and saw how our Lesbian community was built from bars and Daughters of Bilitis (which I was too young to go to) into the amazing spaces you mentioned with Lesbian cafes, 3 bookstores, and so many events, and then it's all gone. I was part of some of it too, and it was so wonderful to experience. There weren't even pro-Lesbian books or publications until much later.
A lot of our loss is about money (I keep thinking one rich Lesbian could fund a space where there could be a place to meet, have music, dances, readings, plays, etc., like we had before.) We did have Dyke Marches in SF and also in Oakland, but the one in SF's description this year is all about "trans," so completely erases Lesbians. They want every last thing we created.
Anyway, I have a lot of our history to share, including our fight to keep and save Lesbian and women only space. I've been writing about it for years, including in the book I co-wrote, "Dykes-Loving-Dykes," And I'd love to go to the Dyke March in 2 weeks with other Lesbians who truly are Lesbians and care about our community (in case you want to get together and go).
I agree that the men who say they are Lesbians are narcissists (and worse, like the one who murdered the Lesbian couple and their son in Oakland, and who is now in a women's prison.) Anyone in an oppressor position who tries to take over the people and culture they oppress is a narcissist. Rachel Dolezal (the white woman who pretended to be Black) was not accepted in the Black community, but these men are accepted by most Lesbians and women.
Saying no to men appropriating our lives and culture is essential, and is the best way to say yes to Lesbian community!
I agree! You know what makes me feel a bit better? That we have always existed and always will. There will always be lesbians and there will always be those of us who fight for our right to take our space.
I agree. We have always existed, everywhere, and always will. I think all females would be Lesbians if patriarchy ended, and when times get easier, there are more, but some of us will always keep loving our own kind.
I don’t think they would be because that’s not how sexuality works. If we didn’t have heterosexuals we wouldn’t have reproduction and that’s part of our means of survival as a species. I suppose homosexuality is an innate evolutionary adaptation.
